Ogden Fire Destroys Building
At 2:00 pm yesterday, a fire broke out on Washington Blvd. in Ogden. Officials arrived on the scene at approximately 2:07 pm.
Deputy Fire Chief, Greg Chamberlain, said at this point they suspect the fire began in the kitchen of the restaurant on the main floor of the building. It is believed to be a grease fire but they haven’t completed a full investigation. Arson is not suspected. Chamberlain said the building had proper fire codes.
Pedro Sanchez, owner and operator of Pedro’s restaurant where the fire is assumed to have started, was in the kitchen cooking hamburgers when the fire began. He said it all happened so fast. He rushed out to the only customer in the facility, Michael Freeman, and told him to call for help. Both men got out safely. Pedro has been here for two years and has already had friends offer to help him rebuild his business. Pedro’s brother, Miguel Sanchez who is waiting on his work visa to arrive, was upstairs in his apartment with his two daughters Maria Del Mar age four and Mercedes age two. All three got out safely. Miguel was treated on site for smoke inhalation while his two daughters were taken to the McKay-Dee hospital to be treated for the same symptom. These were the only individuals in the structure at the time.
When asked to comment on this disaster Rachel Calhoun, owner of the building, said she wanted to wait until she could speak with her attorneys and insurance company.
