I think it is safe to say that most Americans would not feel complete without their cell phone attached to their ear. But would you believe that 35% of people would choose their PDA over their spouse? In a recent 20/20 interview with Barbra Walters, the soon to be president, Barack Obama, was asked about his black berry phone. He will have to get rid of this miracle device because of the potential dangers it could cause him. He said it's going to be a challenge but it will be worth it. I was just shocked that his blackberry came up when there are so many issues to discuss with the future president. Like I don't know say the war, the economy that has gone in the toilet, integration, stem cell research...this list could go on and on before I would ever mention a cell phone.

Don't skip Thanksgiving! I was recently in Wal-Mart and everywhere I looked, it was Christmas. Christmas candy, decorations, clothing etc, etc. It seems this year more than years past, the world of retail wants us to start thinking about all the dough we are going to spend in order to make our Christmas merry.
In my opinion, stores skip Thanksgiving because frankly they make more money on Christmas. Through advertising and getting a jump start on this holiday, people are reluctant to spend more and thus companies make more. PR professionals are working like crazy at this time of year. Planning events, advertising and convincing people to spend money and things they don't need. It will be interesting to see if these tactics work this year. With our economic crisis, people are stuggling just to put food on the table. PR professionals will have to work extra hard and hopefully this season will give our country the economic boost it needs.

Blogs seem to be part of the new technological wave of information. They are free, people can put whatever they want on them and anyone with the Internet can access them. It's no wonder that so many companies are now having blogs of their own. For my final project in this class, we are launching an internal campaign for Delta. When doing research for this company, I was surprised to see that they have a very detailed blog. On another end of the spectrum, I was doing research for a paper about the poet Mark Doty and come to find out, he also has a blog. This is a great way for companies and individuals to get their message out to the world.

We all have noticed the decrease of prices at the pumps which has been a big relief for Americans. It seems however that the food prices are not budging only rising. And now it is becoming quite evident that certain distributors are tyring to trick consumers giving us smaller packages for the same price. A major peanut butter company has now added a dimple in the bottom of the jar. When sitting on the shelf, it looks the same but in fact is several ounces smaller for the same price. Cereal boxes, candy bars and countless more products are adopting the same concept. I know I will be much more conscience of the ounces rather than the brand or price.

Well the big three car companies are not looking good. They are begging the government for a huge loan that most likely they will never be able to pay back. What was ironic to me, was the fact that the three big head honchos showed up in their three private jets. When asked if they would fly home commercially, no one raised their hands. One official said this move was like having a homeless person show up to a soup kitchen in a tuxedo and top hat. My question is, as far as the PR and look for the media goes, what were they thinking?

Today in one of my JCOM classes, we talked about the Internet craze, Second Life. This is a web-site where anything you do in real life, can be done plus some. 40 million people have joined, and every major business and university exists. Thousands of peoples full time jobs relate to Second Life. Now CNN has an i-report center in second life where avatars (the fake people you control) can report.
In the field of PR, this Internet frenzy will be important. Our professor explained that if something happens in second life that makes a business look bad, it is likely that it will affect the real life version of that same business. Thus, a PR campaign must be launched in Second Life to fix the problem. Wow. Technology is getting more and more advanced. It affects PR drastically and must be watched by those working in a field such as PR.

America officially has its next president. After the most historic presidential race in history, Barack Obama came out on top.
In the article A New Day For America: The Next Great Communicator, Obama's charisma is said to have greatly aided his win. The authors, Jim Cameron and Amy Fond point out six main points that carried Barack to victory.
1. TECHNOLOGY: With TelePrompTers involved in the deliverance of speeches, it is important to not look like you are reading off a screen. Obama does this with eloquence, grace and does not let advanced technology set him back.
2. CONNECTING: Even when speaking to a large crowd, Obama makes eye contact. He unites the masses through his words and even brings tears to his supporters eyes.
3. STORIES: People retain information much better when they have something to connect to. Obama brings in stories which allow his audience a more personal connection to what he is saying.
4. LANGUAGE: His word choice and voice intonation bring the audience in and give variety to his speeches. They are not just mundane.
5. REPETITION: Repeating things over and over will make people remember what has been said. Obama constantly repeated his points of importance which made the American people know exactly what he stands for.

In the world of PR, it is so very important to watch what you say and to tell the truth. The article Talk Like You're in a Fishbowl, from the PR News Blog, gives a great example of this.
A player from the Jets talked to an ex-player from the Lions. While the player from the Jets denies he gave any vital team information to his pal on the Lions, he made the mistake of denying in front of the media that a conversation ever took place. With some further interrogating, those interviewing him finally got the truth; the conversation really happened. His whole story looked very suspicious now that he was a proven liar.
The moral of the story, is to talk like you're in a fishbowl. If he would have just been upfront from the beginning, the whole thing could have been avoided rather than winding up on in a major newspaper.

PR news online, has some great articles about today's PR and media. The article How To...Respond to Media's Facts and Opinions talks about what we as receivers of the Media can do to better respond to messages being projected.
With the election being so close, we are seeing a mass output of media messages concerning the candidates. It seems to me, the media is very pro Obama. On the popular TV show, Saturday Night Live, we see McCain and Palin being portrayed as stupid and clueless. Also, several celebrities have publicly endorsed Obama. Oprah Winfrey, Hallie Berry just to name a few.
All of these messages can be very persuasive. Before Americans go to the polls, they need to be sure they know the issues and facts about each candidate. Voters need to make an informed decision and not let the media make decisions for them.

Going along with my energy conservation theme for the week, I thought I would blog on the following article: Study: Consumers save energy to save money by Brandon Lowe.
In today's economy, anything we Americans can do to save a few pennies seems worth doing! With rising energy costs, conserving is becoming even more important.
I can relate a personal experience to this: I always seemed to be FREEZING in our house! When I would go to turn up the heat my dad would always stop me and tell me to just put on a sweater! I would always think this was dumb until I saw the bill for this luxury. It was enormous!
A new study done by the Shelton Group, shows that now more people are turning down the thermostat in order to save cash. This not only goes for homes, but for businesses as well. Looks like it's going to be a cold winter both inside and out!

Wal-Mart is trying to "green" China. In Beijing on Wednesday, Wal-Mart announced its new environmental standards and energy saving tactics which will soon be effective in all Wal-Mart stores.
These new policies and rapidly approaching deadlines to meet them, are all apart of a grand scheme to improve company like ability and make more money! However, Wal-Mart can dictate its suppliers prices because they are such a large corporation.
In today's Eco friendly minded society, it's no wonder that Wal-Mart is vamping up their consumer like ability. They are an extremely successful business and will continue to be because of strategies such as this one.

The Internet is a great tool but according to Mark Stevens, The Internet Is A Creature Of The Past.
Information is readily available both instantly and constantly. However once that information is on the Internet, it can stay there for years to come. When you search for something, you may not notice that it is out-of-date.

ARE USU STUDENTS ALL EQUAL?
Should USU distance education students have the same amenities as main campus students?
LOGAN, UT-- Utah State University is a great institution. Many come, not only for the great academic programs, but also for the strong student atmosphere. The question has been posed as to whether or not distance education students should have the same amenities as main campus students.
Sarah Anderson is the distance education representative for ASUSU (Associated Students of Utah State University). "Well, basically distance education students want the same amenities as main campus students. They want access to a gym, tutors, an occasional game or two. Student government is a concern but not a main concern. They also have different concerns, including child care facility, bookstore and campus open at later times to fit their work schedule." With our current economic situation, many individuals are opting to stay home and attend a regional campus in order to save money. President of USU, Stan Albrecht, feels that he would like Utah State University to be "one university, geographically dispersed."
It seems USU main campus students are also in support of distance ed students having more student services. Russ Miller, a senior majoring in marketing, feels that if regional campus students are willing to pay higher student fees, they should have more amenities available to them. "I think students who pay tuition and fees, just like main campus students, should have access to various student activities etc." Georgio Ramona, a sophomore majoring in Spanish, feels that Utah State students, no matter, where they are should have equal rights. "I mean the only difference from them to us is that they attend school closer to home. Either way they are students of Utah State."
Recently, the regional campus in Tooele has started their own student government and also opened a book store. Suzanne Anderson, an academic advisor, feels the response has been successful. "Students here in Tooele, are very excited about the new additions to our campus. They seem more involved and excited to be here."
The students here at the Logan main campus feel USU students everywhere should have equal access to student resources.
Utah State University was founded in 1888 and currently has over 24,000 students.

With the election just a few weeks away, Americans need to think critically about who they will cast their vote for. As I have been researching the candidates, I found an interesting article about John McCain.
John McCain's week of shameful lies talks about his rash decision to have Sarah Palin as a running mate. (In my opinion, his main goal with this was to win the votes of women who were planning to vote for Hillary Clinton). The article claims that she does not have sufficient knowledge to make important decisions for our country. The media is attributed for allowing people to see the "real" Sarah Palin and understand that perhaps her involvement was just a ploy of McCain's to win the election.
In the words of Mark Rose, author of this article, "sleazy politics does not work."

We all know that there is a new age of networking and socializing. Facebook and MySpace would have to be at the top of this new age list. I read a blog post titled MySpace to connect users with US presidential debates. Wow. I knew that MySpace was a big deal but I never expected them to actually broadcast the debates.
The videos will be on demand and users can book mark them. This makes for easier and more targeted viewing. "I'm confident that this is the best way for new media to intersect with the general election presidential debates," CPD executive director Janet Brown said in a statement.
"Our educational partnership with MySpace builds on the unique power of digital media to further engage voters on the issues and help ensure their voices are heard in new and effective ways."
The power of the Internet still amazes me!

I read the PR blog by Amy Novac titled Inside the Google Campus. Google is one of the most successful companies and many attribute that success to a happy work environment. Google's philosophy is that if their employess are happy, their company will thrive; thus far this strategy has worked.
Novac described the Google campus as Willy Wonkas Chocolate Factory. It is colorful, fun, youthful even the lunch trays are bright red. The people that work for Google eat, exercise, work, volunteer and even live with each other on this campus. Yet they don't tire of each other. There is a anti-suit policy and little hierarchy within the company. Everyone seems happy and healthy and eager to do their work. No wonder Google is so successful.

With the situation our world is in, many major banks are going under. Washington Mutual, a huge national bank was recently bought out by Chase Bank. Now Chase Bank is doing some major PR work to make their services trusted and well known.
In a recent issue of TIME Magazine, Chase Bank posted and ad with a woman and a cute fluffy dog. (As always, you can't go wrong with pets). It was a full page color ad that was black and white with only a few of things colored in their signature blue, including what looks like a Chase Bank card. How could you not love Chase after this?
According to the article Advertising campaigns: Chase Consumer Bank and National Health Partners, Chase has now started its first ever Spanish advertising campaign called "Confia en ti. Confia en Chase," or "Confidence in yourself. Confidence in Chase". Ryan Mclnerney, head of marketing for the company, had this to say: "Our new ads are designed to show that customers can trust Chase to provide the financial services needed in various life situations."
It is obvious that Chase Bank is doing some major PR work. It will be interesting to see if all this advertising pays off.

ARE ALL STUDENTS TREATED FAIRLY?
Should distance education students have the same amenities as main campus students?
LOGAN, UT--Utah State University is a great institution. It has knowlegeable professors, a beautiful campus and nationally ranked academic programs. While these are all reasons to attend the home of the Aggie's, most students also come here for a social atmosphere and many student accomidations that are provided.
On the Logan campus, there are several student computer labs, including a Macintosh lab equipt with various Mac programs. There is a gym, a pool, a clinic, free transportation, several sports feilds, free tutoring, career center, free student activites and sporting events not to mention all the different clubs and organizations students can get involved in. The list could go on and on. All of these things are provided with tuition and student fees.
There is a discussion going on between President Stan Albrecht, Provoist Rhonda Menlove and several student representatives for regional campus' acrossed the state. The question has been raised as to whether or not distance education students should havethe same amenities provided to them as main campus students.
Patrick Stone, a sophomore majoring in biology, moved here from Idaho Falls. He has to pay out of state tuition and could have opted to attend a community college instead. "This is the central body of Utah State. One of the perks of coming to Logan for school is you get to enjoy the amenities offered." Stone feels that those who are at a community college have chosen to stay there for a reason and that coming to Logan entitles you to all the student resources.

I, like most Americans, am very concerned about our country's financial situation. I read the article PR Fuel: A $700 Billion PR Blunder. This article discussed the mistakes the government made in relation to the PR of the bailout plan.
The first mistake made was calling this a "bailout" plan. The word "bailout" has a negative connotation and may cause people to support it less. The article suggested that other terms be used such as: "The Financial Stability Act" or "The Home Owners Rights Bill". These would have sounded better to Americans.
The second mistake made was the bill shocking most Americans resulting in people talking to others about things they knew nothing about. Word-of-mouth can be a very powerful thing and when you have millions of people discussing something they have no knowledge about, the outcome can be scary.
With such a big change being proposed, I feel the government should have been more careful about the way they presented information. Perhaps Americans would have been more receptive to the "bailout" plan.

With the presidential election right around the corner, I thought it would be interesting to do some research about some different PR involved with the campaigns. I went to the Media Relations Blog by Kevin Sawyer who is a media relations specialist. The thing that stood out to me the most was the power of the Internet when it comes to political matters.
You Tube is known and used by millions of people. This is a "social networking site". Anyone can log on to watch and comment on videos posted. Presidential speeches find their way into the You Tube world. So if a candidate messes up, the video will be at the fingertips of virtually anyone and that blonder can be seen over and over.
Recently in Minnesota, there was a record setting turn out for caucus events. This was a result of the Internet. People would go online to read up on the issues. They were convinced that their participation was important.

Our economy is in SERIOUS trouble. I honestly feel bad for whoever is elected president of this country for having to get us out of this mess. Yesterday the $700 billion dollar bail out plan was rejected which made me wonder what effect PR had in all of this?
I read an article from The Huffington Post called Bush Asking For $700 Billion Bailout (creatvie title, I know). When the Bush administration announced this plan to help our economy, people were relived. Stocks around the globe instatnly shot up. The Dow-Jones even went up 368 points. All because of this one announcement. It is incredible to me that by using media sources such as radio, television and newspapers this type of reaction was produced. The power of media and PR is real and this is a prime example.

Mark Stevens article, The Drudge, The Grudge, Oprah...and Me discusses what happens when traditional and digital media come together and form traditional and digital PR.
When Palin asked to appear on Oprah Winfrey's show, Oprah apparently gave her the "thumbs down". Palins PR team quickly alerted all types of media. Many questions about Oprah were being asked:
* Was Oprah biased in favor of Obama? (I don’t think that’s a tough one to figure out.)* Was this a form of blacklisting?* Does Oprah talk the open minded talk but fail to walk the walk?* Was Oprah simply adhering to her programming policies?http://www.prnewsonline.com/blog/index.php/feed/
Stevens was interrupted from a book recording to take a call from FOX 13 News. They wanted him to prepare his thoughts on the whole Palin/Oprah situation. Because the story had to get out so fast, Stevens prepared his thoughts in the limo on the way to the show.
He sums up this chain of events as follows:

I read the article Leaving the tools in the head shed: Protecting confidentiality and intellectual property in public relations By: Susan Balcom Walton.
This was very informative and gave good information for both those already working in the field and those aspiring to work in the area of public relations.
If you move from one company to another, you should be mindful of what you say starting with the interview for the new position. PR practitioners are hired in large part for their experience. However, it is very important to to know what information is acceptable to pass on and what may be unprofessional. Employees should also be familiar with copyright laws so that others ideas do not get passed off as their own. The confidentiality of your clients and former employers should be important to you. Their ideas, or tools, should be kept in the "head shed" and not be used to build another company.
While it is true that knowledge and skills are beneficial in the field of PR, a personal and professional code of ethics should be kept in tact when in the work place.

The PRSA bases its ethics and leadership on three main things: code of ethics, personal responsibility and professional opportunity. In the year 2000, the code was re-written and is now based on a reasoned approach. The PRSA web-site states that professional ethics is an individual matter. This means that while in the work place, an employee should take it upon themselves to keep their standard of work ethics high and follow through with those values set. The PRSA web-site also states that performance counts and practice makes perfects. A quality employee should not settle for a half done job or expect their work to be perfect the first time. It takes repetition and commitment do get things right.
The new code values include: advocacy, honesty, expertise, independence, loyalty and fairness. A main responsibility of a public relations professional, is to provide the best representation possible for clients but to also be fair and honest to the public. If these values are followed, there will be no problem in accomplishing both tasks.
The PRSA lays out a personal "moral compass." Ask and encourage questions, look at the choices and identify appropriate behavior. This enables a professional to properly assess and handle any situation. By following this "moral compass" things will be done fairly and honestly.
The PRSA also lays out a list of principles. These include free flow of information, competition, disclosure, safeguard confidences, conflict of interest and enhance the profession. But what is the difference between a value and a principle? A value is an established ideal whereas a principle is a rule of conduct. Values are basically the foundation for principles. ABC Real Estate brings to Logan a new way to buy and sell homes
LOGAN, UT—The president of ABC Real Estate, Preston Parker has announced that his company is coming to Logan. Parker claims that his business is different because it uses the Beneficiary-Directed Equity-Holding Land Trust system which is exclusive to Cache Valley. Parker has partnered with Bill Gatten, the creator of the BDEH Land Trust system, who has only allowed one other company to use his inventive idea. The BDEH Land Trust system puts the home in a trust that includes four beneficiaries: seller, creditor, investor and resident. One of Parkers goals is “to teach people how to use the system.” Parker is actively seeking those individuals who are in a position to invest.

The President of ABC Real Estate, Preston Parker, has announced that his new company is coming to Logan. This systmen was created by Bill Gatten. By using this system, the home is put in a trust and there are four beneficiaries: seller, credit, investor and resident. Parker is looking for investors and those with good creidt. "Logan is a good location for this because it has a very strong home-ownership mentality" Parker said.

Dear Cousin Margo:
It was nice seeing you at the family reunion! I am sorry we had to take off so early, but my dad really doesn’t like my mom’s side of the family. Anyways, I am writing to you in response to your questions about what a career in Public Relations may entail.
A central goal of Public Relations is to give positive exposure to an organization or individual. It is important that information can flow freely and clearly between these groups and the public. In 1988 The Public Relations Society of America stated: “Public Relations helps an organization and its publics adapt mutually to each other.” This statement still holds true today. Those who chose to work in this exciting field must be prepared to tactfully handle complaints, work with the press, downplay any harmful exposure, work well with others and handle any unusual situations that may arise.
The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that opportunities for jobs in the area of Public Relations will remain strong for many years. The rate for increase in PR job opportunities is estimated to be greater than the average for all other jobs combined.
If you are thinking about going into PR, you must develop good writing skills. Press releases, articles, brochures, pamphlets and many other things that involve writing are encompassed with a job in PR.
There are a variety of jobs waiting for those with a degree in Public Relations. Some of these include: marketing communications, media relations, corporate communications, event planning (which is what I hope to work in) and much more. This is a broad field and there are many directions you can take.
Well my dearest cousin, I hope that this letter has helped you become more informed about the field of Public Relations. I will look forward to our next family reunion!

Tragic Accident Claims Four Lives
Tremonton, UT- Around 4 p.m. today, a van carrying at least eight Utah State University students rolled on Interstate 84 just west of Tremonton. The vehicle was carrying students and an instructor back from a field trip in association with Utah State University’s agriculture week.
Trooper Jason Jensen of the Utah Highway Patrol was the first law enforcement official to arrive on the scene. In his 15 years of experience, he said: "This is by far the worst accident I’ve ever seen…this is something that will affect people for years". Jensen said at least four were dead on the scene.
Eyewitness, Kyle Holden, was with the students on this field trip and was driving a vehicle right next to the van. He watched as the driver’s side rear tire blew and Evan Parker, the driver of the van, lost control. Parker was not able to get back on the freeway and eventually the van rolled. Holden said people were being shot out of the van.
Dean of the College of Agriculture, Noel Cockett, said this was an exceptional group of students. Robert Peterson and Jared Nelson are in the hospital in serious condition. The names of the two other survivors are not being released at this time. Evan Parker, Steven Bair, Curt Madsen and Brad Wilcox were all pronounced dead on the scene. Events for Ag week are being canceled in order to hold memorial services for these individuals.

Ted Turner and Bill and Melinda Gates propose plans for African Villages
LOGAN, Utah- Ted Turner and Bill and Melinda Gates were seen getting off a private jet together and meeting with local African officials. Bill Gates was unaware that this trip was announced however he said that the trip was successful. Gates revealed that future plans have been discussed to help Africans better take care of themselves and prevent deadly diseases such as measles and small pox. Ted Turner is confirmed to have joined forces with the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Bill Gates said that by joining their efforts together they will have a higher impact in helping the people of Africa. Gates also said that Ted wants to see where his money is going and so he is actively involved. "I think this will be a good relationship." Gates said.
Malik Ok, and African Mayor, met with the Gates and turner to discuss what they want to accomplish in villages throughout Africa. Ok gave them a feel for the peoples needs. He is happy about the efforts being made because it’s not just people handing them items like clothing, medicine and food. It’s all that combined with the education of how to keep these resources intact.
Gates said a press conference will be held within the next few weeks that will cover more details about the plans in progress for Africa.

Victory for the Utah Jazz
SALT LAKE CITY- "I'm proud of my boys" said Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloane regarding the outstanding game the Jazz had against the San Antonio Spurs. The final score was 106-99 however, Sloane says the score "is a little bit deceiving." It was a close game and the Jazz were able to play hard at the end to win the victory.
Sloane credits the game to C.J. Miles who had a career high of 30 points and also Ronnie Brewer who has just returned back to the court after recovering from a right groin injury. When asked about his injury, Brewer said "I tried not to favor it. The doctors say I'll be OK. I was just happy to be in the game today at all."
The Jazz once again broke the 3-point record, formerly held by the Washington Wizards, scoring 16 3-point shots. Kyle Krover played a big part in that scoring all 3 of his attempted 3-point shots.
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said the Jazz were very respondent to the crowd. "It's really hard to win in this building." Popovich said the Jazz had some great stops and it really came down to the wire. "The Jazz are a great team."
The Jazz are ranked 6th and every game matters for the playoffs.

GETTYSBURG, Penn.-On the hot, dewy day of Nov. 19, over 1,500 people gathered to hear President Abraham Lincoln gave a noble speech about the battle of Gettysburg. Lincoln declared that part of the battlefield will serve as a memorial for the 7,500 soldiers lost in the battle. "We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this." Lincoln said.
With our nation in a state of war, it was obvious that a main goal of this speech was to motivate the people of this great country. Lincoln stated: "the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-"
Many were intrigued by this address and it may be just what America needs to get us through this war. We are fighting for many honorable causes and it is comforting to know that we have a leader who can carry us through.
Lincoln ended his speech by saying: "that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. "

Well all of that is changing thanks to ClearPoint. This is a company that provides patients with information about certain types of medical procedures they are about to undergo including pregnancy, in/out patient surgery and physical therapy just to name a few. There is no cost to patients. It is all included with the cost of the surgery.
Preston Parker, senior vice president of ClearPoint, said, “This is a way to cut down on time and money. Patients who lack information have a slower recovery time. Patients come more prepared and this reduces the amount of surgeries hospitals have to reschedule. It really is a win win situation.”
ClearPoint meets with doctors here in Cache Valley to learn about the information for procedures. They then provide simulated instruction, DVD's and different literature to show patients what is going to happen.

A legend dead
Illinois, Chicago- Oprah Winfrey, a legend, passed away after affection from her fans got out of hand.
Around 3:30 pm, Oprah was walking to her car after filming her show at Harpo Studios. Adoring fans spotted her and immediately wanted to get closer to the star. There were so many people that body guards could not fight them off and Oprah eventually suffocated.
Oprah has been an inspiration to men and women all over the world. She began her broadcasting career when she was only 19, and became the first African- American women to anchor the news in Nashville. She is most famously known for The Oprah Winfrey Show which has been the number one talk show for 21 seasons being broadcast in 134 countries.
Oprah received countless awards throughout her life including Television Performer of the Year, National Freedom Award, Humanitarian Award, and Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame just to name a few. She traveled all over and used her fame and fortune to help those in need. Her most famous quote “live your best life” has radiated in the hearts of thousands and will be a lasting legacy of Oprah.
Oprah is survived by her partner, Steadman Graham, her four dogs and countless fans a cross the world. She will be deeply missed.

Trial set for burglary case
Logan, Utah- The trial date has been set for March 21st to determine the consequences for last weeks break in to a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Noel Mayfield, district attorney, said that she has "presented sufficient evidence". Jim Michael’s, 35, and a 15-year-old juvenile, whose name is not being released, are the prime suspects in this case. The two individuals are said to be aquantices and are suspected to have been involved in previous crimes together. Michael’s, who is out on a 5,000 dollar bail, faces up to one year in prison while it has yet to be decided how the juvenile will be tried.
Robbie Cochren, defense attorney, is representing Michael’s and feels that there is not enough valid evidence to convict him. "This will be an interesting trial because Judge Mayfield is unpredictable". Michael’s is pleading innocent.
There is no relation between Noel Mayfield and Judge Alan Mayfield.

Michael’s, who is out on a 5,000 dollar bail, faces up to one year in prison while it has yet to be decided how the juvenile will be tried.
Robbie Cochren, defense attorney, is representing Michael’s and feels that there is not enough valid evidence to convict him. "This will be an interesting trial because Judge Mayfield is unpredictable". Michael’s is pleading innocent.
There is no relation between Noel Mayfield and Judge Alan Mayfield.

PNS: Crime
Burglary in local LDS meeting house
Early yesterday morning, a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was burglarized. The meetinghouse is located on 900 North and 1600 East in Logan Utah.
Sheriff Deputy, Jeoffery Hasty, said there was no forced entry. He believes two juveniles climbed through a small open window. There were two smashed computer monitors on the floor, and various computer equipment is missing. Right now they are working with finger print evidence to determine the suspects. Hasty said that the case is "pretty cut and dry".
Lawrence (Larry) Shirk is the presiding bishop over the Hillcrest 1st ward which meets in this building. Shirk was the last one to leave the building last night. He had opened up his window for some fresh air and forgot to lock it. Shirk said that luckily all church records had been deleted off the computer equipment stolen, and transferred to newer devices. He left the building around 11:00 p.m.

Extra Practice News Story 2: Fire
Ogden Fire Destroys Building
At 2:00 pm yesterday, a fire broke out on Washington Blvd. in Ogden. Officials arrived on the scene at approximately 2:07 pm.
Deputy Fire Chief, Greg Chamberlain, said at this point they suspect the fire began in the kitchen of the restaurant on the main floor of the building. It is believed to be a grease fire but they haven’t completed a full investigation. Arson is not suspected. Chamberlain said the building had proper fire codes.
Pedro Sanchez, owner and operator of Pedro’s restaurant where the fire is assumed to have started, was in the kitchen cooking hamburgers when the fire began. He said it all happened so fast. He rushed out to the only customer in the facility, Michael Freeman, and told him to call for help. Both men got out safely. Pedro has been here for two years and has already had friends offer to help him rebuild his business. Pedro’s brother, Miguel Sanchez who is waiting on his work visa to arrive, was upstairs in his apartment with his two daughters Maria Del Mar age four and Mercedes age two. All three got out safely. Miguel was treated on site for smoke inhalation while his two daughters were taken to the McKay-Dee hospital to be treated for the same symptom. These were the only individuals in the structure at the time.
When asked to comment on this disaster Rachel Calhoun, owner of the building, said she wanted to wait until she could speak with her attorneys and insurance company.

He reportedly ran out and told Michael to call for help. The fire quickly spread and it is unknown the cost of the damage or if the building can even be repaired.
There were no fatalities however Pedros brother Miguel Sanchez and his two daughters Maria del Mar who is four years old and Mercedes who is two, were in their apartment on the second floor of the building. PNS 1: Accident
Tragic Crash for Utah State University
At four p.m. today a Utah State University van carrying ten Utah State students and one instructor rolled on Interstate 84 just west of Tremonton. As part of Utah State Universitys Agriculture week, the students and instructor were taking a field trip.
Kyle Holden had accompanied the group and was driving alongside them when he noticed something was not right. He reportedly saw smoke coming from the back of the vehicle. Then witnessed the van swerve in and out of lanes before the wheels caught and it spun out of control. "It all happened so fast…." Holden said.
Lt. Jason Jensen of the highway patrol was the first law enforcement offical to arrive on the scene. Jensen said that three to four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene and the rest were taken to near by hospitals. He speculates that the van was going at least 95 to 100 miles per hour and that this factor was a major contributor to the accident. In Jensens 15 years of experience he has never seen a crash of this calibur when seat belts were being worn.
Noel Cockett, Dean of the college of Agriculture, got a phone call from a university rep. Telling her of the news. Evan Parker, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. Evan was 45 years old. Steven Bear, 24, also pronounced dead at the scene along with Brad Wilcox and Curt Madsen. Jared Nelson and Robert Peterson are recovering at Ogden Regional Hospital. The names of the other victims are being withheld.

My love hate relationship for the snow
It is always bound to happen....the snow in Logan is just a given but this year it has been especially bad. It seems like every morning I wake up to look out my window and see the snow softly falling, covering the ground it an enourmous while blanket. It is so pretty and peaceful to look at and gives you that warm Christmasy feeling. Then when you go to walk in it, it's an entire different story. To get to campus, I have to walk up a ridicously steep hill. The snow becomes ice and I become an eighty year old who takes twice as long to walk places. While the snow is pretty, I really do not enjoy trying to commute in it. I guess that's the price you pay to be an Aggie, and in all truthfullness it is worth it.
